A talk by the Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh on Mindful Consumption

All things need food to be alive and to grow, including our love or our hate. Love is a living thing, hate is a living thing. If you do not nourish your love, it will die. If you cut the source of nutriment for your violence, your violence will also die. That is why the path shown by the Buddha is the path of mindful consumption.

The Buddha told the following story. There was a couple who wanted to cross the desert to go to another country in order to seek freedom. They brought with them their little boy and a quantity of food and water. But they did not calculate well, and that is why halfway through the desert they ran out of food, and they knew that they were going to die. So after a lot of anguish, they decided to eat the little boy so that they could survive and go to the other country, and that's what they did. And every time they ate a piece of flesh from their son, they cried.

Guardians of Being (words by Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now and A New Earth and art by Patrick McDonnell, creator of MUTTS) celebrates the reason we love our companion animals.  It illuminates for us their divine purpose.  While we are lost in our thoughts and busyness of everyday life, they have become our guardians of being.  They can bring us into the present moment and reconnect us to the one source of all life.    

Guardians of Being is a collaboration of Eckhart’s teachings and my cartoon illustrations.  As does all of Eckhart Tolle’s work, Guardians of Being teaches us about finding inner peace by living in the now, the transformation of our consciousness, and the arising of a more enlightened humanity. The primary signposts in this new book are all of nature and, in particular, our beloved dogs and cats.

Dr. Amit GoswamiDr. Amit Goswami is the author of the new book, Creative Evolution: A Physicist’s Resolution between Darwinism and Intelligent Design [Quest Books]. Dr. Goswami is a pioneer in using quantum physics to articulate the paradigm shift from a materialist to a consciousness-based worldview. He earned his doctorate from Calcutta University in theoretical nuclear physics. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Oregon, where he taught physics from 1968 to 2003. 

 
Dr. Goswami first developed the premise of a consciousness vs. materialist view in his highly acclaimed The Self-Aware Universe. Books that followed include The Visionary Window, Physics of the Soul and The Quantum Doctor. His research on creativity in the 1980s led to his book Quantum Creativity. His text book on Quantum Mechanics has been used in many major universities. Dr. Gaswami is the subject of a forthcoming documentary entitled The Quantum Activist.

How did you get started collecting and publishing stories about the spiritual connection between people and animals? Why do you call yourselves a “golden team”?
 
In 1996, we were walking around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis with our yellow Labrador Taylor. She had a big grin on her face. People kept stopping to ask if we knew our dog was smiling. We thought about how much joy she and our other animals were bringing to us. We started listing spiritual qualities we were gaining by observing and living with our pets – love, gratitude, creativity, joy. We wondered if other people felt they were learning spiritual lessons from animals. After the walk, we went home and made up a flyer to put around town and we posted questions on Internet animal chat groups. We asked: Are you learning spiritual lessons from animals? Have you ever had a dream with an animal? Do you think animals go to heaven? Within 60 days we had hundreds of responses from all over the world. We knew we had to share these wonderfully inspiring stories of animals as spiritual beings.
